As many of you know, I love to travel, but, I also love my little garden. I normally travel during the UK winter months, knowing my garden can look after itself, during these dormant months.
However, I recently spent 3 summer weeks away. How was I to keep my planters happy and watered while I was away?
I had previously used a wicking method using jute string. This had been marginally successful, so I decided to upgrade this model of watering, by using a proprietary garden watering wick.
I scoured Amazon for 4 star or more products, and found Orimerc Self-Watering Wick. It was affordable and came with good reviews from fellow gardeners, 4.2 stars.
My wick arrived in good time, and with excellent instructions and advice.
My video shows
⁃ how I buried lengths of the water soaked wick in each pot. I used a sharp stone to push the well soaked lengths of wick into the earth.
⁃ I then tied a stone to the free end
⁃ I gathered all the prepared pots around a water trough
⁃ Then sunk the weighted end of the already soaked wick into the water filled trough
⁃ I made sure the trough was above the height of the pots
I came back to my plants looking well. The weather had been very hot, so I was glad I had placed the trough and pots in the shade. The method worked well for me, perhaps you might like to give it a try.
