Old documents, a meeting, and a book

A few years ago, while sifting through some documents inherited from my mother, I found an old manuscript, written in German. I set about translating it.

It was a memoir, written by my uncle. His memories of life in Germany under Nazi rule. Bravely enduring torture, he defied the Nazi regime.

I decided to research a friend, my Uncle Emil mentioned. They had been imprisoned together. Typing, Walter Wächter, into Google, his son, Torkel, came up in the search. With rising excitement, I followed the link to Torkel’s website and made contact. http://www.onthisday80yearsago.com/t-s-wachter/

Last year, at a memorial in Hamburg celebrating the brave souls who suffered under Nazism, I met Torkel Wächter. It was like reaching back through time, to honour our relatives. Over the years, I have researched the Art Deco era between the World Wars, and inspired by my uncle’s story, have written a book

It is my privilege to share this amazing story. Betweenwhiles: A family between two wars – a true story of rebellion against Nazism.
