Postcard from the Falkland Islands

Even in torrential rain, these islands are beautiful. We took a bus to Gypsy Cove, and were rewarded with penguins hanging out on the beach. The spring broom in bloom, was a beautiful backdrop for the Magellanic penguins nesting in burrows in the peat and sand dunes.

The harsh weather conditions, means there are no wild trees on the islands. But the amazing indigenous ferns, grasses, herbs and lichen, create a stunning landscape.

The sand, derived from the quarts rock, is fine and white, worthy of any Caribbean beach. The sea temperature was a mere 3c, so we ducked out of our planned swim.

On returning to Port Stanley, we met Jeff. Jeff, born on the Falkland’s, had become dissatisfied with the local beer. So he trained in the UK to become a master brewer. We can verify, that Jeff sells extremely good beer in the Falkland Beerworks.
